Protecting Children

As a school community, Luanda International School (LIS) is committed to providing an excellent international education program in a safe and caring environment. The protection and welfare of children and young people from all forms of violence, abuse and exploitation is a key priority for the school.

LIS is committed to safeguarding and promoting the protection and welfare of children and young people. This goal begins by ensuring all applicants for teaching and non-teaching positions are carefully reviewed. Our recruitment process and protocols are rigorous and include criminal record checks and accurate pre-screening information about their visa, study, health and work history, including any aspects of their past or present profile that could affect the reputation of LIS or the well-being of those already in the school.

Following the pre-screening and hiring process, employees who have accepted an offer of employment and provided all necessary documentation must complete child protection training and sign the LIS Code of Conduct. This Code of Conduct applies to all faculty, staff, employees, students and volunteers who interact with children or young people in both a direct and/or unsupervised capacity.

In cases where there is reason to be concerned with an employee’s suitability to work with children, LIS will conduct a full internal inquiry following a course of due process. Based on the outcome of the inquiry, appropriate action will be taken in accordance with school policy. The school reserves the right to suspend or summarily dismiss an LIS Employee for matters of misconduct including abuse or neglect of children.

By enrolling your child/children at Luanda International School you have agreed to work in partnership with the school and abide by the policies adopted by the Luanda International School Board of Directors. Child Protection Policy

LIS believes and recognises that every student has the right to live in a safe and secure environment. LIS also recognizes that abuse and neglect fundamentally affect a child’s well being and ability to learn. This child protection policy and its related procedures and protocols are founded on the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, a human rights treaty which deals with child-specific needs and rights. As a signatory nation that ratified this convention, Angola is bound to it by international law.

All staff employed at Luanda International School must report suspected incidences of child abuse or neglect whenever the staff member has reasonable cause to believe that a child has suffered or is at risk of suffering abuse or neglect. Reporting and follow up of all suspected incidences of child abuse or neglect will proceed in accordance with administrative regulations respective to this policy, which will be reviewed annually by the School Director. Furthermore, cases of suspected child abuse or neglect might be reported to the respective consulate in Luanda, to the appropriate child protection agency in the home country, and/or to local authorities.

Luanda International School will communicate this policy annually, provide annual training for all staff, and ensure hiring practices for employees and contracted service providers includes the appropriate criminal and sexual offence reports to safeguard children. All staff will be expected to sign the child protection code of conduct. In the case of a staff member is reported as an alleged offender, Luanda International School will conduct a full investigation following a carefully designed course of due process.

    The LIS Primary Section runs a Reading Volunteer Programme to assist the development of Reading in our Year 1, 2, 3 and Portuguese A classes. Our Reading Volunteers help in classes during the day by listening to the children read and enable the students to gain further practice of this important skill. Feedback from students, parents and our teachers has been very positive, as parents enjoy the interaction with the children, and the children love to share their reading skills with our volunteers.     Thank you to all families who came along to support this year's International Day celebrations held on Saturday, 07 October 2017. The fun, festivities and tasty food ensured that everyone had a great family day out. People were happy, festive and proud to share a sense of their culture and identity. Our mission statement highlights that we are a diverse group of learners. We are extremely grateful to the LIS community who supported an international booth or volunteered their time. A special thank you to our PTA members who helped to plan and coordinate such a successful school community event.

    Take three ambitious year 12 LIS students, a great medical cause and the highest mountain on the African continent and you have a recipe for a truly inspiring life experience. Our ‘Trek for Meds’ team including Molly, Nabeeha and Denise successfully planned and completed an expedition to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, the tallest mountain in Africa! Their collective goal was to raise money to buy malaria preventative medicine and tests to distribute to families in rural areas of Angola. Malaria is a recurring cause of child mortality in Angola. The Trek for Meds team received tremendous encouragement and recognition from their immediate and global communities. The overwhelming support helped the team to conquer the mountain and smash their original fundraising goal of USD3,000. This is service leadership in its purest form. In the spirit of our mission statement, I am confident this amazing story will inspire many other students to find a unique way to ‘thrive in the world’.

    LIS maintains an inclusive strategic plan with a systematic process of reflection and feedback.
    On 10 and 11 March 2017, a group of 28 participants comprised of LIS students, parents, staff and Board Directors attended a strategic retreat at the school. We discussed the data, shared points of view, challenged perspectives and summarised our thinking about the school's mission, vision, values and parameters for the school. Prior to the discussions a strong meeting protocol and process was established to ensure equal participation. No one voice was greater or lesser than the other. Given the diversity of the group, getting alignment and consensus around big topics like mission and values was no easy task. In fact, a large proportion of the time was spent reviewing, rejecting, re-writing and finally accepting the value statements. Many people felt strong about particular statements and spoke respectfully and with great passion to defend ideas. However, Dr. Andy Page-Smith was able to facilitate the exercise and decision making process with great skill, expertise and respect.

    LIS celebrates Peace Day every September. The morning begins with an assembly and continues with a variety of Peace Day centered workshops throughout the day. The day ends with a Peace parade. The children “walk for peace” around the campus on a predetermined route and then finish in the school cafeteria area for a final assembly. Parents come to cheer the children on.
